The stainless steel thickness range weldable by handheld laser welding machines is mainly influenced by equipment power and welding parameters. Typically, these machines can weld stainless steel within 0.3mm to several millimeters. The specific minimum thickness also depends on the following factors:


Equipment Power

  • 1000-watt handheld laser welding machine: Can weld stainless steel up to 3mm thick. In some cases, with lower tensile strength requirements at the weld and using double-sided welding, it can handle slightly thicker stainless steel plates, such as 1cm thick, as its melt depth is about 3mm.

  • 1500-watt handheld laser welding machine: Can weld stainless steel up to 5mm thick.

  • 2000-watt handheld laser welding machine: Can weld stainless steel up to 8mm thick.


Welding Parameters and Material

  • Weld size: If the weld is larger than 0.3mm, it is recommended to use a wire - feed laser welding machine. However, for materials thinner than 1mm, non - wire - feed laser welding is suggested, as wire - feed welding is slower and may cause deformation.

  • Welding material: The weldable thickness of handheld laser welding machines is also affected by the welding material. Different materials have varying melting points, thermal properties, and laser absorption rates, which influence welding outcomes.


Welding Results and Selection Recommendations

  • Welding results: For stainless steel sheets between 0.3mm and 0.5mm thick, while some handheld laser welding machines can perform the task, there may be relatively fewer devices offering excellent welding results. In this regard, cold - media handheld laser welding machines perform better.

  • Selection recommendations: Choose a handheld laser welding machine based on the actual thickness of the material to be welded. It's not advisable to use a machine designed for thick plates on thin ones. Also, be mindful of laser power attenuation.
