Welding machines are commonly used in factory workshops, repair shops, and even some household settings. Many people who first encounter welding machines wonder: Do I need special qualifications to use a welding machine? Must the operator be certified to work? Today, I'll explain these issues in plain language to help everyone understand the qualification requirements for using welding machines.

I. Do You Need Special Qualifications to Use a Welding Machine? It Depends on the Scenario

Whether special qualifications are required to use a welding machine cannot be generalized and mainly depends on the usage scenario and type of welding machine:

If it's for occasional personal or household use of a small welding machine, such as repairing a metal shelf or fixing a small part, and the welding work does not affect public safety or involve industrial production, special qualifications are usually not required. These small welding machines have low power and a limited working range, and the associated risks are relatively low. As long as you master the basic operating methods and pay attention to safety precautions, you can use them.

However, in industrial production settings, such as using welding machines in factories to process parts, welding steel structures on construction sites, or using large, high - pressure, or special welding machines (such as laser welding machines or plasma arc welding machines), special qualifications are necessary. This is because such welding operations involve production safety and product quality and may also affect the surrounding environment and personnel safety. Relevant departments regulate and manage these activities through qualification reviews to ensure that operations meet safety and technical standards.

Moreover, if the welding work involves special fields, such as welding pressure vessels or special equipment (like elevators or cranes), not only does the unit using the welding machine need the corresponding qualifications, but the work itself also has to go through special approval to ensure that the entire welding process is compliant.

II. Must the Operator Be Certified? In Most Cases, Yes

As for whether the operator must be certified, the answer is more straightforward: Except for the occasional personal or household use of a small welding machine, operators are required to be certified in most scenarios.

From a safety perspective, welding operations involve risks such as high temperatures, electric arcs, sparks, and the potential generation of harmful gases. Being certified means that the operator has undergone professional training and has mastered safety operating procedures, risk prevention methods, and emergency response skills. This can effectively reduce the occurrence of accidents such as fires, explosions, and personnel injuries from burns or poisoning.

From a quality standpoint, the welding quality in industrial production directly affects the performance and service life of products. Certified personnel are familiar with welding process requirements and can adjust parameters according to different metal materials and thicknesses to ensure that weld seam strength, tightness, and other indicators meet standards. This helps avoid product scrapping or safety hazards due to improper operation.

At present, the common welding operation certificates in China are issued by the emergency management department (formerly the Work Safety Supervision Bureau) or the human resources and social security department. Operators need to attend professional training and pass both theoretical exams and practical operation assessments to obtain a certificate. There are different categories of certificates, corresponding to various welding methods (such as shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding) and materials. Operators should choose the appropriate certificate based on the welding work they are engaged in.

However, it should be noted that if someone is only assisting a master in a factory, such as handing tools or cleaning weld slag, without directly operating the welding machine, certification is not temporarily required.
