▷ Application Industry: Electrical Equipment Manufacturing
▷ Workpiece: Door Hinges
In the manufacturing of electrical equipment and metal structural components, door hinges may be relatively small parts, but they play an important role in door installation, opening and closing performance, and overall operational stability.
This project comes from a customer in Zhongshan, Guangdong, China. Based on the customer's actual welding requirements for enclosure door hinges, PDKJ designed and manufactured a custom automatic hinge welding machine, providing a targeted welding equipment solution tailored to the customer's production needs.
The customer specializes in the manufacturing of electrical control enclosures, including indoor distribution boxes and power cabinets. With complete production lines covering metal fabrication, sheet metal welding, painting, and assembly, the company handles large order volumes and frequently switches between enclosure models with different specifications. As a result, its hinge welding process requires consistent quality and high production efficiency.
As production demands continued to grow, the customer sought to improve hinge welding quality, increase process output, and reduce defects caused by manual operations. The equipment also needed to accommodate door panels of different sizes.
The customer therefore requested customized automated welding equipment that could integrate the welding process with corresponding automation mechanisms, making operations more standardized and better suited to actual production conditions.
Although welding door hinges may appear to be a straightforward process, actual production involves several important considerations, including workpiece positioning, welding location, operating methods, and production efficiency.
Based on the project's customization requirements, the main considerations were as follows:
① More Stable Workpiece Positioning
The door hinge must maintain the correct assembly position relative to the corresponding workpiece. When positioning relies primarily on manual placement, variations in operator experience and working habits may lead to inconsistencies.
Dedicated positioning fixtures combined with the machine structure help standardize workpiece placement and reduce positioning variations caused by manual operation.
② More Standardized Welding Operations
Door hinges are metal components with specific structural features. Their welding positions and assembly conditions must meet the required product specifications.
A dedicated welding machine allows the fixtures and welding mechanisms to be designed around the workpiece structure, ensuring that welding operations follow predefined process requirements.
③ Reduced Repetitive Manual Operations
For metal components produced continuously, repetitive loading, positioning, and welding operations can consume considerable labor resources.
By integrating automation mechanisms with the welding system, suitable process steps can be coordinated to reduce repetitive manual work and provide opportunities for improving the overall production workflow.
In response to the customer's requirements, PDKJ developed the equipment solution based on the structural characteristics of the door hinges and the customer's actual production conditions.
With overall dimensions of 2500 × 1500 × 1800 mm, this machine was specifically developed for projection welding of enclosure door hinges. Built around a proven resistance projection welding process and customized fixture modules, it is designed to meet the customer's practical production requirements.
The machine is equipped with two welding pressure assemblies. The left and right welding heads can operate independently, allowing each head to complete hinge welding operations separately.
The welding heads are movable and adjustable. Their spacing can be quickly changed to match the hinge installation positions of different door panel models.
When switching product specifications, operators can call up the preset program and complete the required positioning adjustments in approximately 5 minutes, helping shorten changeover time and improve equipment utilization.
Considering the raised projection structure of the hinges, the machine adopts a resistance projection welding process.
Each welding head is equipped with upper and lower pneumatic cylinders and front-and-rear drive modules to execute a standardized operating sequence: the welding head moves downward to clamp the workpiece, initiates the welding cycle, and retracts before moving upward after welding is completed.
This controlled sequence helps maintain consistent clamping force and welding timing, reducing positioning deviations caused by manual operation. It also helps prevent insufficient welds and welding misalignment, supporting consistent joint strength and positioning accuracy for each door hinge.
The machine adopts a semi-automatic operating mode with manual workpiece loading. The operator places the hinge at the welding head, pushes the door panel into the positioning stop, and then starts the welding cycle.
The welding time for a single hinge is approximately 2 seconds. Based on three hinges per door panel, the overall production cycle can reach approximately 20 seconds per piece.
With a straightforward operating logic, the machine can be operated by production-line personnel after basic training. No complicated programming is required, making it suitable for everyday factory operations.
The standard delivery lead time for this project was 30 working days. PDKJ followed the entire process, from initial requirement discussions and 3D design confirmation to equipment manufacturing, on-site commissioning, and final delivery.
The machine was optimized according to the customer's actual workpiece dimensions and production conditions to ensure compatibility with the existing workshop environment.
This door hinge welding machine project represents another example of PDKJ's customized welding equipment development for customers in the electrical equipment manufacturing industry.
From initial discussions about welding requirements and equipment design to machine development and manufacturing, the entire project focused on the specific welding needs of door hinges. Rather than simply supplying a standard welding machine, PDKJ designed the equipment around the workpiece structure, welding positions, and production workflow to provide a solution that better fits the customer's actual application.
Different types of metal components have different welding processes and production requirements. A thorough understanding of the workpiece characteristics and manufacturing requirements is essential for selecting suitable welding equipment and automation solutions.
This is the foundation of PDKJ's continued development and manufacturing of customized, non-standard welding machines for industrial applications.
